Ratnapura District

Udawalawe

Famous for elephant safaris — herds gather at the reservoir year round, and the Elephant Transit Home cares for orphaned calves nearby.

About Udawalawe

If you want to be confident of seeing wild elephants, Udawalawe is the place to go. Several hundred live in the park permanently, drawn to the grassland around a large reservoir, and sightings are near-certain on any game drive at any time of year — often of whole family groups with calves.

The open, scrubby terrain makes for far easier viewing than dense jungle, and it is excellent for raptors and water birds too. At the park entrance, the Elephant Transit Home rehabilitates orphaned calves and releases them back into the wild; feeding times are open to visitors.
