Arugam Bay

The surfing capital of Sri Lanka, with world-class point breaks, laid-back beach cafes and a season that runs from April to October.

About Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay on the east coast is the surfing capital of Sri Lanka, and its right-hand point break at Main Point draws surfers from across the world between May and October — precisely when the south and west coasts are being battered by monsoon.

It remains an unpolished, low-rise strip of guesthouses, board shops and beach kitchens along a single road. Beyond the surf there is a genuinely wild hinterland: lagoons full of birds, and elephants in Kumana National Park just down the coast.

Things to see & do

  • Main Point — a world-class right-hand point break
  • Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock for all levels
  • Pottuvil Lagoon safari by canoe at dawn
  • Kumana National Park for elephants and birdlife
  • A relaxed, unhurried beach-village atmosphere
