Galle Fort

A 17th-century fort city on the southern coast.

About Galle Fort

Built by the Portuguese and massively rebuilt by the Dutch in the seventeenth century, Galle Fort is the largest remaining European-built fortress in Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. What makes it special is that it is still lived in — behind the ramparts is a working neighbourhood of coral-stone villas, mosques, churches and warehouses.

The pleasure of Galle is simply walking it: shaded lanes of colonial townhouses now holding galleries, jewellers and cafés, and a rampart circuit that catches the sea breeze and, at the western bastions, one of the finest sunsets in the country.

Things to see & do

  • The full rampart walk and sunset at Flag Rock
  • The 1848 lighthouse above Point Utrecht Bastion
  • Dutch Reformed Church and the Maritime Museum
  • Independent galleries, gem dealers and boutique cafés
  • Street cricket on the Fort green in the late afternoon

Best time to visitDecember to April for dry, bright weather. The Fort is pleasant year round; go early or late in the day to avoid the midday heat on the walls.
Getting thereAround 1.5 hours from Colombo on the southern expressway, or a lovely coastal train ride. Twenty minutes from Unawatuna and 45 from Mirissa.
