Nuwara Eliya District

Nuwara Eliya

Misty tea country in the heart of the highlands.

About Nuwara Eliya

At 1,868 metres, Nuwara Eliya is the highest town in Sri Lanka and the coolest — the British called it Little England and built it to look the part, with a racecourse, a golf course, mock-Tudor hotels and hedged gardens. Mornings here are genuinely cold, and a fire in the evening is not unusual.

The surrounding hills are covered in some of the finest tea in the world. Estate tours explain the whole journey from plucking to tasting, and the roads out of town lead to waterfalls, reservoirs and the cloud forest of Horton Plains.

Things to see & do

  • Working tea estates and factory tours with tastings
  • Horton Plains National Park and World's End escarpment
  • Gregory Lake and the colonial-era town centre
  • Victoria Park, at its best from March to May
  • The hill-country train line through Haputale and Ella
